My Ex Asked For Section 7 Expenses; What Are Those?

Special or extraordinary expenses, often referred to as Section 7 expenses, are additional costs for a child that go beyond basic child support. These expenses are ordered or agreed upon to ensure the child’s specific needs are met.

Examples include:

  • Medical or dental premiums for the child.
  • Uninsured health care costs over $100 annually.
  • Extra education-related expenses (elementary, secondary, or post-secondary).
  • Extracurricular activities that are unusually costly.
  • Some child care expenses, depending on the situation.

Furthermore, for any expense claimed to be shared by the parents as a special or extraordinary expense, the expense must be:

  • Necessary
  • Reasonable
  • Consistent
